Sorry in advance for the length…We *will* consult with our Drs more in depth, just want to know other parent’s opinions (as well as other Drs, nurses, ct scan technicians)
My dd2 will be 6months in 10 days. When she was about 2months, my MIL noticed a growth on her head (in the back, on her left side). So, I took dd2 in to the pediatrician (who I trust dearly) and she said it’s mostly likely one of three things:
1) a lymph node swollen b/c of being around someone sick…even if there are no symptoms of a cold/ virus/ etc, the body could still be fighting something off.
2) a cyst…”most likely” benign…
3) calcified growth…but since it doesn”t have definitive edge, it probably isn’t this.

Dr recommended to massage it and watch for any changes (reddening, growth, change of shape, soreness, discomfort, etc)…dd2 had a well check scheduled in two wks, so she’d examine it again at that time (no changes). Dr reassured me that it was very common for babies/kids to develop cysts in various places, this one just happens to be on dd’s skull. Apparently they can devolop b/c of fluid that can build up and get through the spaces between growin bones???
“Most likely”, the only thing is it may irritate her when she brushes her hair (the brush will keep bumping it causing it to be sore)
Dr examined it regularly, keeps reassuring me, but said there is a *slight* possibility it could grow into something more. She referred us to a specialist at Nemours, who said the same things. She said we can leave it alone for now, or schedule a surgery to remove it. Earliest they’ll do surgery is 9months, b/c they would have to use anesthesia. MIL was surprised at this b/c she had a cyst removed from her back while completly awake/ alert. But Dr said a baby/ child would not be able to stay still for procedure (understandable!)…won’t be able to until pre-teens/ teenage yrs. I asked Dr about any scans/ tests they can do to see if it’s just a harmless growth or anything to worry about. Dr said only a CT scan, but they don’t routinely do that for babies this young b/c they need to be sedated.

So we have 3 options.
1)leave it alone unless we find something alarming
2)leave it alone until pre-teen/ teenage yrs when she won’t need anesthesia
3) take it out at 9months but need anesthesia

What would you do? What are the risks of a CT scan, anesthesia, and leaving the growth alone for now?
also, insurance does not cover this procedure b/c it is concidered “cosmetic”

I have been diagnosed as having a non-hodgekins lymphoma in June 2008. It was a follicular center cell vs large b cell mass on my scalp. It was removed, and I was treated with 20 rounds of radiation to my head and 4 treatments of IV Rituxan. In July 2008, only my scalp showed the fdg accumulation of lymphoma. Nothing in my chest. As of October 2008, every subsequent PET scan has showed a “pneumonitis” in my right lower lobe. Up to now, it has not changed — not gotten bigger or smaller on the last 4 PET scans over the last year and a half. I have not had any pneumonias, or had any chest issues. I do remain “hot and sweaty” (meaning the back of my hair gets wet on exertion), run low grade temps (99.5 – 99.8) at times, remain very tired and fatigued (never got better since I finished radiation), and minimal amt of hacking cough which is not productive. All my labs have great – I am not anemic, have good liver functions, normal thyroid, normal electrolytes. Have had elevated Sed Rates (23) but I also have Crohn’s Disease which has been fairly quiet in the last year. My highest LDH was 225 at the time of tumor removal in June 2008. It did go down to normal post-op. Now my LDH has suddenly gone up to 260, after being normal in Sept 2009. I was s ent for a CT of my head, chest, neck and abdomen. It was all negative except for the chest. The chest still shows an unchanged area of pneumonitis on the right posterior-medial lobe, a possible calcified node in that area, and a mild right lower lobe infiltrate.
Should I be concerned that something is evolving in my chest? What should the next step for me be? I am worried about cancer and any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!!
